Catching Boo Raises Funds for Shelter

Catching Boo is a children's book written by Joanne Rowlinson and illustrated by Brian Morton. It features a story of a dog named Book who was adopted by a loving family. Joanne Rowlinson is a local author and her book has been selling well in Ottawa and in Ottawa Valley. Joanne and Brian have donated a percentage of the profits to the shelter in the amount of $500! Joanne and Brian also donated a percentage to HART in the Bancroft area as they say "These organizations were very helpful during the time we were trying to find and bring Boo home".

The shelter would like to encourage everyone to check out this fabulous book! Thank you so much to Joanne and Brian for their generosity! Their support will help us continue to support families who are trying to relocate their own "Boo".

“Animal Lovers Day” helps to foster humane attitudes in young people.

On March 17, 2009 the Renfrew County Branch of the Ontario SPCA will be holding "Animal Lovers Day" at the Petawawa Public Library. Animal Lovers Day is a special time just for kids aged 7-12! Kids will learn all about animals while having fun! Activities will include crafts, games, and humane education.

Animal Lovers Day is indented to foster humane attitudes in young people while having fun! It’s all about fostering kindness as well as respect and empathy for both people and animals. The OSPCA believes that fostering humane attitudes now creates humane citizens for the future.

“It’s our hope that by providing humane education to the community we can help create a sense of responsibility in our young people and make the world a more humane place for everyone” says Jamie Sabot, the Volunteer and Humane Education Coordinator at the shelter.

Animal Lovers Day runs from 10am to 3pm and registration is limited. The registration fee is $25 per child or $40 for the “family deal” which covers two children. Children need to bring their own lunch and be ready to have some fun!

To register your child for this unique opportunity, please stop by the shelter during open hours (10am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am – 4pm on Saturday and Sundays). Registration fills up fast so please stop by the shelter today so you won’t be disappointed. For more information please contact Jamie at
jsabot@ospca.on.ca or 613-588-4508.

The Ontario SPCA helps get your dinner plate into the fast lane!

The Renfrew County Branch of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA) plans to help you get supper on the table in 20 minutes or less with the sixth edition of their fabulous cookbook. The OSPCA has once again partnered with Turbo Graphics to raise funds to help the shelter continue their vital work in the community. In 2008 the shelter helped over 1300 animals – not a small task for a tiny animal shelter that works solely on donations from their generous supporters.

Last year’s Multicultural Cuisine cookbook was a huge success. The edition featured community recipes, pictures and stories. This year’s edition will follow this community based theme again but plans to speed things up! Recipes that will be included in the cookbook will be meals that can be prepared in 20 minutes or less – because we all know that at the end of a long day, nobody wants to send their spare time slaving over a hot stove!

“I’m particularly excited for the release of this year’s cookbook! I would rather spend my time volunteering at the animal shelter than in the kitchen” says Julie McBride, a dedicated volunteer for the OSPCA. Julie knows that quick meals can have all flavor and nutrition of a traditional meal – with the right recipe!

The OSPCA invites community members to submit their favourite fast meal recipes along with a picture of their pet, stories, jokes and tall tails. Nora Johnson and the staff of Turbo Graphics plan to advertise, collect recipes, design and print the books – a very big undertaking for the company. Recipes and photo submissions will be collected until March 14th and the cookbooks will make their debut at the 2009 Showcase on April 17 – 19 at the Petawawa Civic Centre.

The cookbooks will be sold by local businesses who have offered their support. All recipes, stories and photos can be dropped off at Turbo Graphics at 185 Pembroke Street West, faxed to 613-735-7128 or emailed to
turbographics@on.aibn.com .

Thank You Phoenix Centre Youth!

Thank you to the generous youth at the Phoenix Centre who donated some much needed supplies! The youth were sent with a shopping list and a budget and boy did they do well! We are so impressed with how well they did and that they got all the items we really needed! (i.e. lemon cleaner, bleach, office supplies, etc). Thanks again!
